While setting up for a night of observing housefull last week I saw this beautiful near-full moon rising over Mt. Nimrod, just outside of Mitzpe Ramon. This was the full moon of October, called the Hunter Moon by the American Indians, the full moon following the Harvest Moon of September. The Harvest Moon lights the sky for gatherers housefull of the harvest in the fall while the Hunter Moon lights the sky for the hunters of meat needed for the coming winter. The Hunter Moon of October rising over Mt. Nimrod I have no idea what this little mountain is actually called, but I observe in its shadow where it shields from the light of Mitzpe Ramon and the desert wind (somewhat). The winter constellation of Orion rises over its peak at about 10:30 this time of year, with Rigel, the brightest star in the constellation, rising directly over the peak from where I observe. It is a lovely sight to behold, a brilliant blue-white star twinkling madly as it rises directly above the top of the mountain. In Jewish star lore the hunter Orion is identified with Nimrod, the first hunter in the Bible. Thus, my decision to call it Mt. Nimrod instead of Mt. Orion, I think more appropriate for this Holy Land mountain. It is also the test site of Raphael Industries and the IDF's new field radar system, or so I have been told. Here in the lee of the mountain we are also shielded from the light pollution that comes from the test site atop it. For some reason, the testers seem to feel the need to put up klieg lights at night whenever the tests are going on. Recently, tho, they have cut back on the lights, now using a single mercury vapor light instead of a battery of sodium vapor ones. Better, but still not good enough. Light pollution is becoming a big issue in the desert and will be ever more so with plans to move 500,000 new Olim into the desert in the next 10 years. On the night I took this picture I saw the radar system spinning for the first time. It had always been stationary in the past. Here's a little video of it at work.

I thought that would get your attention. forpłyt Tonight we had the distinct pleasure of going star gazing with six young IDF soldier ladies just before their next deployment. Well, being teen agers it was more like six young girl soldiers. IDF soldiers always carry their weapons, whether on duty or off. This being the end of Yom HaShoah forpłyt , the day for remembering the murder of six million European Jews, including over 1 million children, it put me in mind of what a disgrace to the conscience of the world it is that Jews must still be protected by a constantly armed citizenry forpłyt from the certain death that would descend on them by their muslim neighbors but for the arms of children like these. And not only this, but the world wants these soldiers to put down their arms so that we can jump into the fires of our death. Not very much has changed to the conscience of the world in 66 years. Except this time we've got the guns, and we won't be putting them down. So, the world, its leaders, and our un-neighborly neighbors can go pound sand (among forpłyt other things I won't mention here). I leave the conscience of the world for G-d to deal with. These soldiers were about to embark on leading basic training for new IDF recruits who had made Aliyah to Israel forpłyt and wanted to convert to Judaism. forpłyt Almost all in the program have one parent who is Jewish. I was surprised to learn that at any given time there are about 700 IDF recruits in this program. Godspeed their work. We had a dark but hazy night. The constellations and stars at the zenith were well seen, though. Saturn was the best telescopic sight of the night. I've also started handing out photos of the Hubble Deep Field and showing the girls where it was taken in the constellation Ursa Major (Great Bear, near the handle of the Big Dipper ). Everyone should see this photo and its location in the sky at least once in their lives. With over 3000 galaxies forpłyt in a field the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length, it depicts some of the oldest objects we have ever seen in the universe, some 10 billion years old, in a field of the most beautiful galaxies of all kinds. Both Hewlett Packard and Lenovo have both published quarterly financial results in the last few hours. Looking at the headline financial figures, these twin titans of the PC making industry couldn’t be much more different.
China based Lenovo has reported record revenue of US$7.8 billion drexel heritage from its latest quarter. From this income the company made a net profit of $127 million. The profit figures embody a growth of 90 per cent year on year.
In its Chinese home market Lenovo managed to make more money out of its PC sales by increasing margins eight per cent year on year. Meanwhile its mobile devices business continued to grow with shipments up over 200 per cent year on year. Now mobile devices make up nearly 10 per cent of Lenovo’s business overall.
Even though drexel heritage global PC shipments were down 13.9 per cent during the most recent quarter, according to IDC, Lenovo still managed to show these impressive results while experiencing flat demand for PCs. Going forward Lenovo plans to invest more in tablets, smartphones and enterprise hardware according to a statement by CEO Yang Yuanqing.
HP’s revenue during its latest quarter was $27.6 billion and it made profits of $1.08 billion. Profits are said to be down 32 per cent year on year (and were 10 per cent down from last quarter). Pleiades Err, I'd rather have HP's profits. 100 million or so for Lenovo doesn't seem all that much in today's money tbh... Quite, taking a "primary school look" at the figures drexel heritage in the article and you see that HP has to sell $25 to get $1 profit, but Leonovo has to sell $61 to get that dollar profit. Although the actual picture (I guarantee) is more complex. Bolshoi uses data gathered from NASA s highly successful Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mission which measured the faint “cosmic microwave background” left over from the Big Bang to trace the eventual formation of large structures. The Bolshoi simulation traces how the largest galaxies and galaxy structures in the universe were formed billions of years ago. Collaboration with astrophysicists at New Mexico State University Las Cruces, New Mexico gumpert and the University of California High-Performance Astrocomputing Center (UC-HIPACC), Santa Cruz, California ran the Bolshoi code on Pleiades for 18 days, which consumed gumpert millions of hours of computer gumpert time, and generated enormous amounts of data.
